Connemara Pony Festival

In conjunction with Galway County Council’s Waste Prevention Programme, Connemara Pony Festival Goes Green 2013.

The Greening of this year’s festival, held every Summer in Clifden, involved the festival committee working to increase the quantities of waste diverted from landfill through improved composting and recycling practices at the festival. This was achieved through all on site food providers using compostable products such as compostable coffee cups, lids, plates, bowls, serviettes, knives and forks which were segregated in organic waste bins with any additional food waste for composting.   All plastics, cardboard, aluminium and glass were segregated in recycling bins for recycling.

Signage (see photos below) and regular announcements from the MC continuously highlighted the waste segregation stations through the festival.  Through this process over 60% of the waste arising from the festival was segregated and either recycled or composted.

There was a very positive feedback from the festival committee, food providers, staff and attendees at the festival.
